If you’re reading this, you must be doing research for your first baby. Congrats! What an exciting journey you’ll be going through (and is already experiencing!)
When I was going through this exact research before my first baby arrived, I had no idea what I was getting into. Needless to say, I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of wisdom from moms and parents before you, but things are probably not sticking.
Don’t worry! this post will summarize most of the most improtant things for you so you don’t have to remember them! (mom brain much?)
Feeding
If you choose to breastfeed, there will still be a lot of things you’ll need to get to be prepared and comfortable as a human milk machine.
Must haves:
Nursing bra
My personal favourites are the ones that are a tank top. The tank that covers your torso is great for feeding in public and during the winter days. You don’t want to be exposing your belling in the cold and will provide you some coverage in public.
Nursing pads
I didn’t know what these were before, but are a NECESSITY when breastfeeding. Once your milk comes in, you’ll be having letdown – where your milk will flow even on the breast you’re not feeding on!
I personally like the disposable ones if you’re lazy because milk can rot in the reusable ones and the disposable ones have better absorption.
Breastpump
It’s a necessity if you want to give yourself a break or have a blockage that you need to get worked out!
I have tried both electric and manual. If i were to try one now, I would go for the cordless! It will free you from sitting long hours in one spot and you might just be able to get that load of laundry in the dryer.
Manual pump
If you want to just pump out some milk from begging engored, a good option is a manual pump or a Hakka
Milk savers
If you have an overactive milk supply, these are great for capturing letdown so you don’t have to pump extra! Use a milk saver cup or a Haaka for the same effect.
If you’re feeding formula, here are somethings you’ll need
Sterlizer
It’s great for cleaning all the bottles or pump parts in a safe environment that doesn’t require you to water or boil any water.
Forumla dispenser
These are handy for pre-measured amount of formula you can just dump into your bottle.
Hot water dispenser
We wish we got this earlier! It saves time boiling water and you get instant hot water for your formula!
Sleeping
newborn sleep is something! You’ve hard of people sleeping like a baby, but in reality, a baby doesn’t really sleep that soundly. Here are some things to get you through those sleep deprived nights.
Must haves:
Swaddle
THE most important for a newborn! My favourite is the Swaddle up swaddle sacks. The best thing about swaddle sacks is that you don’t have to worry about the swaddle blanket unravelling. These little babies are houdinis!
Basinet/ Playpen
Newborns can sleep anywhere, so it’s best to have something that’s portable so they can sleep where you can watch them. Playpens are great because they can grow with the baby and some also have a changing pad right beside it for each night changes.
